What is the CVSA International Roadcheck Program?

- 62,796 inspections were carried out during the 72-hour period.
- Approximately 62% (42,336 inspections) were level-1 inspections.

What’s the Focus of International Roadcheck 2017?
This year, in 2017, the special focus will be on cargo securement. Although cargo securement has always been an important part of these roadside inspections, CVSA is going to highlight it this year as a reminder of its importance to highway safety.
Roadside inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Standard Level-1 inspection. For those who don’t know, the North American Standard Level-1 inspection is a 37-step procedure which includes driver inspection and vehicle fitness. It is generally considered to be the most thorough inspection.
During the inspection, drivers may have to provide the following:

- Hours-of-Service documentation
- Shipping documentation
- Motor carrier registration
- Medical examiner’s certificate
- Hazardous material paperwork
Additionally, inspectors will also check drivers for seat belt usage and influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
On the other hand, vehicle inspections will include:
- Coupling devices
- Fuel systems
- Lighting devices
- Exhaust systems
- Steering mechanisms
- Rims and hubs
- Windshield wipers
- Emergency exits on buses

4 Tips to Pass the CVSA Roadcheck 2017
So how can you prepare and make sure you pass the inspection blitz? Here are four tips that will help you with it.
1.Keep Documents Updated and Available
As mentioned earlier, drivers may have to provide a few documents during inspections. Make sure that all those documents are updated and readily available.
Additionally, drivers should put all these documents into a folder and have them properly organized. It makes drivers look professional and organized, which often increases the chances of a quick and successful inspection.
2. Know the Cargo Securement Regulations
As cargo securement is going to be the highlight from June 6 to June 8, it is a good idea to go through the regulations once again. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) outlines the U.S. cargo securement rules. All the regulations are easily available on their website.

3. Properly Secure Loads and Equipment
It is important to note that the cargo securement regulations apply not only to the items carried for delivery, but they also apply to anything else on or in the truck. This includes tools and equipment that must be properly secured. For instance:

According to the regulations, tie-downs should be properly attached and secured so that they don’t open or become loose while the vehicle is in transit. The problem, however, is that tie-downs wear and get damaged over time.
