The best safety features that enhance your bottom line and elevate your KeepTruckin experience

KeepTruckin understands that safety is a primary goal of your fleet. To help your business improve its safety operations, we’re constantly striving to meet your goals. Our fleet management solution offers safety features that will enhance your KeepTruckin experience and help improve your bottom line.

Here are some of the best safety features you need to know about.

Predict future collisions

Today’s near miss could be tomorrow’s collision. The KeepTruckin ELD has sensors to let you know which of your drivers hard brake the most. You can set up the fleet management system to inform you when hazardous driving events like hard braking, hard acceleration, and hard cornering occur. It’s the next best thing to a crystal ball.

Data: One fleet experienced 50-70 percent reductions in hard braking and acceleration

You can look at the data in your driver scorecards and determine where to focus your safety effort. Norman Bright, Fleet and Safety Manager at Woodford Oil, did this.

He says, “Driver scorecards and Smart Dashcam footage have made our coaching much more effective. In four short months, we’ve seen a significant decrease in critical events, including hard braking cut in half and an almost 70 percent reduction in hard accelerations.”

4 key features that improve your safety workflow

So how does this work on a day-to-day basis? If you have KeepTruckin Driver Scorecards and the Smart Dashcam, it starts with the KeepTruckin Dashboard. The Dashboard helps fleet managers identify risky behaviors like hard braking.

1. Video annotation: Focus on the serious issues

As a fleet manager, you don’t want to spend all day going through every video—you want to see the critical ones first. With the KeepTruckin solution, videos can be tagged for serious issues like:

  • Tailgating
  • Lane cutoff
  • Unsafe lane change
  • Near miss
  • Collision

Video annotation

The KeepTruckin solution uses AI to automatically annotate videos, so fleet managers can review the most critical events first.

2. Video recall: Get the exact footage you need

Once the annotation feature has alerted you to an event you need to review, you can use the video recall feature to view the video taken at the time of the incident. You can request videos around a certain date and time, or just select the timeline around part of a video. You can also request videos from location history.

Video Recall - Requesting video

Since you can recall any video footage from the last 35 hours of driving, you can see the event in context. This allows you to coach the driver or provide exoneration.

3. Sensors: Get event alerts

The KeepTruckin ELD includes accelerometers, gyroscopes, GPS, speed sensors, and other connections to the vehicle’s onboard systems. These are used to identify driving events with over 95 percent accuracy.

Sensor fusion is a new feature that uses a combination of vehicle speedometer, GPS-based speed, accelerometer, and gyroscope to identify risky driving events. A variety of sensors working together does a better job of detecting events than single sensors without checks and balances.

4. Driver scorecards: Who are your most at-risk drivers?

KeepTruckin’s Driver Scorecards feature uses safety events to rank drivers according to their performance. This safety score even takes into account fleet and industry averages and total distance covered. An overall safety score for your fleet is determined from individual driver scores.

Driver scorecards safety scores

You can customize safety event thresholds for different vehicle types. You can set how much acceleration, for example, will trigger a safety event that contributes to the driver’s safety score. When establishing these thresholds, it’s a good practice to enlist the help of a veteran driver, to confirm that your thresholds are realistic. This can also create greater driver buy-in to your safety culture.

This feature allows fleet and safety managers to identify risky behavior, improve driver performance, and track driving trends. If you look at your top 10 safety violations, you may find they were caused by the same drivers. You can improve your fleet safety scores by coaching your most at-risk drivers, and then watch your coaching effectiveness shift driving behavior over time.

The KeepTruckin App allows you to show drivers how their safety scores compare against other drivers in the fleet. You can show drivers their own Smart Dashcam footage to aid in training. As Bright says, “Showing our drivers their individual, event-driven video footage has motivated them to take ownership of their driving behavior, which has made our coaching much more effective.”

You can even add video footage to events tracked in Driver Scorecards to add visual context safety scores and critical events.

A culture of safety may help improve your bottom line

A good safety program is an investment in your business, and the resulting safety culture not only reduces collisions but can also enhance driver retention and increase profitability. Fleets of all sizes can benefit from continuous improvements in safety.
