Reduced accidents by 32% annually—and made its safety team more effective.
- Took a proactive approach to drive safety and reduced accidents annually by 32% after implementing KeepTruckin
- Made their safety department more effective using the Smart Dashcam, DRIVE risk score, and the Safety Hub
- Automated risk identification to save time and lower operating costs
In today’s new world of nuclear verdicts, every business’ worst fear is that they’re just one catastrophe away from a multi-million dollar lawsuit. That concern is justified: in the last 10 years, cases with payouts of over one million dollars have increased by 5X.
That’s why the most successful safety departments focus on taking a proactive approach to driver safety. Identifying high-risk behaviors early, and modifying these bad habits before a crash occurs, can make all the difference in keeping both liability and insurance costs low—and profit margins high.
But we know that identifying these high risk drivers is no simple task. And today’s safety departments haven’t been set up for success—they’ve been left high and dry by vendors who don’t make them more effective in their jobs and don’t help to help prevent crashes before they occur. KeepTruckin has changed that.
Some of our most successful customers use KeepTruckin’s solution as the framework to power their safety departments. This case study will cover how Usher Transport transformed their safety program by leveraging KeepTruckin’s technology to proactively identify high risk behavior, encourage safe driving to prevent crashes, and lower operating costs.
Meet Usher Transport
Usher Transport is a fourth generation family-owned company. They have been in business for over 75 years, with a focus on hauling hazardous materials, bulk lubricants, and oil. While they’re headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, they operate nationwide across 11 terminals. Their operations also span into Canada, where they typically haul bulk oil across the border multiple times a week.
Usher Transportation’s EVP of Safety and HR, Beau Mosley, joined Usher Transport in 2018 as the company was looking for a compliance solution. Beau was familiar with KeepTruckin from a previous company, and recommended our technology as the easiest to use system to manage compliance. With an intuitive device installation and world-class customer service, it was a no brainer. But as the company grew, Beau wanted to take Usher Transport’s safety game to the next level.
The problem: moving beyond exoneration
Usher Transport was previously using a standalone dashcam provider for their safety program. These incumbent dashcams posed a few problems for Usher Transport:
- These cameras were not integrated with an engine-connected gateway device to track events like hard brakes. This meant that Usher Transport only got half the picture of what was happening on the road with drivers.
- These dashcams did not pick up on high-risk behaviors to notify the Usher Transport team of who to coach, and what behaviors to coach on.
- Because of the lack of visibility, Usher was only able to use their existing dashcams for exoneration only.
Using an integrated fleet management platform as its operating system was mission-critical to Usher Transport’s next level of growth.
“Having dashcams for exoneration was a way to protect our business from a reactive standpoint, but one of the huge holes we had in our program was the ability to take a proactive approach to coaching. We needed a camera solution that would give us those insights, and was also integrated with our ELD compliance product.”
That’s where KeepTruckin stepped in.
The solution: taking a proactive approach to driver safety
Previously, Usher Transport relied on anecdotal feedback to know who to coach and what to coach them on.
“The main goal for a safety program is changing behavior and driver coaching. For us, it was tough to gauge anybody’s behavior besides looking at violations, negative citations, and collisions—all data points that happened AFTER the dangerous behavior,” adds Beau.
Now, Usher Transport relies on facts. The KeepTruckin Safety Hub, which is powered by KeepTruckin’s proprietary DRIVE risk score, gives Usher Transport the necessary intelligence they need to proactively take action with their drivers.
The DRIVE risk score can be thought of as the intelligence layer in the KeepTruckin platform. Once data is captured from KeepTruckin’s Vehicle Gateway(ELD) and Smart Dashcam, DRIVE uses proprietary algorithms to automatically analyze this information to generate never-before-seen insights into driver risk and behavior. These insights are made available in KeepTruckin’s Safety Hub, where Usher Transport’s safety department can immediately take action.
With the combination of our Vehicle Gateways, Smart Dashcams, and Safety Hub, Usher Transport’s safety department can automatically pinpoint who they should coach and what behaviors they should focus on. Our DRIVE risk score is able to determine the true risk profile of a driver relative to their peers by evaluating behaviors that are benchmarked across KeepTruckin’s network of over 400k vehicles.
“As a carrier, we have different responsibilities for the public and doing our part in keeping our roads safe. We need to be able to identify those high-risk driver behaviors proactively instead of reactively,” explains Beau. “I’d say the best thing about all of it KeepTruckin is giving us the ability to objectively identify risk and change behavior on the front-end, rather than the back-end.”
With this type of visibility into where risk lies, Usher Transport can take the necessary steps to proactively modify unsafe patterns before a crash occurs. The numbers speak for themselves: as a result of this proactive approach to safety, Usher Transport has decreased the total frequency of accidents in their fleet by 32% annually.
The results: Usher Transport’s safety department – enhanced by KeepTruckin
Usher Transport leverages KeepTruckin’s technology to help its business run safer operations. There are 3 different use cases for how our safety solution helps to enhance their existing safety program:
- Out of the box risk framework: Many fleets resort to building their own internal models to establish risk profiling. Instead, Usher Transport uses KeepTruckin’s DRIVE risk score and Smart Dashcam as a turnkey infrastructure to help power driver risk identification. DRIVE acts as an assistant to help remove a lot of the busy or ineffective work—like figuring out who to coach or what to coach them on. When that process can be automated, Usher’s team can focus on the highest impact work, like rewarding and coaching.
- Automated risk identification: With KeepTruckin’s Smart Dashcam and DRIVE risk score automatically pinpointing Usher’s high-risk drivers, they can quickly take action to get in front of coaching specific behaviors as soon as possible. “Now, we’re getting those alerts in real-time. Plus, having a camera that shows us all those near misses and identifies the most risky behavior is key to taking action with drivers,” says Beau.
- Powerful driver retention programs: It’s important to show appreciation for drivers so they understand how critical they are to the business. Highlighting drivers that are doing well, or drivers that have made significant improvements to their behaviors, is an easy way to promote a culture of safety.
“We use it as a coaching program to better ourselves,” says Beau. “Many of the videos we have captured are now part of our orientation program. We take them, we share them, and we learn from our mistakes—it’s a win-win.”
A “FOCUS” on safety
Let’s talk more about incentives. Usher Transport has a program called FOCUS — “Focus On Cultivating Usher Safety.” It is based entirely on driver performance from KeepTruckin, and is tied to categories like preventable collisions, hours of service (HOS) violations, speeding violations, and more. If drivers have any violations in any category, they lose their bonus for that quarter.
“There are thousands of ways KeepTruckin helps to enhance our FOCUS safety program: coaching opportunities, collision reduction, frequency reductions, injury reductions, and bettering our CSA scores, you name it!”
Because KeepTruckin’s fleet management platform is integrated, Beau is able to get the full picture of what’s happening in his fleet when it comes to safety. With the ELD compliance data and driver safety data from Usher Transport’s drivers available in one place, Beau’s team is able to break down the data silos that would normally prevent them from running safer and more efficient operations.
This visibility not only helps the safety department make better decisions; it also leads to impactful company-wide ROI. One of the best parts about the visibility Usher Transport gets is in the form of lower insurance premiums.
“If we can proactively get involved and prevent those negative behaviors, it leads to lower insurance premiums at renewals. That money saved on insurance is cash I can help invest toward other areas of our business,” says Beau.
KeepTruckin’s technology is the engine that sits under the hood of Usher Transport’s safety program.
“I mentioned that we didn’t have a proactive approach to coaching with our previous dashcam provider, and KeepTruckin has really filled that void,” says Beau. “If I were looking for one thing that KeepTruckin does best of all is that it allows us to be proactive about changing behavior. Of course exonerating my drivers is key, but even more important is getting ahead of high-risk behaviors to prevent that crash before it occurs.”
Usher Transport is not only coaching current drivers to grow their annual accident reduction rate beyond 32%, but is onboarding future drivers with the same videos and insights from KeepTruckin to proactively get ahead of the safety curve.
“I feel good about what we do. KeepTruckin is the perfect complement to our robust safety program. Their technology automatically pinpoints where we should be focusing our time and attention—which means my team can be more impactful in doing our #1 job: making our fleet safer.”
