How do electronic logs work?

Electronic logbook apps are paper log replacements. An electronic logbook, also called an “elog,” can help capture data on driver status that drivers previously recorded manually on their paper RODS. The electronic logging automatically logs using a connected IoT device that ties to the vehicle. 

The Motive electronic logbook app is an electronic version of a paper log — a driver still records their duty status and other FMCSA-required log information. ELDs are systems that include hardware devices that sync with a vehicle’s engine to automatically record and track a driver’s Hours of Service (HOS), which have been required as of December 2017.
